The Politics of Development
A pathbreaking introduction to the controversial, contested and deeply political topic of development.Written in an engaging and eminently readable style, leading authors invite readers to examine the political dynamics behind some of today’s most complex global issues, from rising inequality and social exclusion to the climate crisis.By confronting false assumptions and dispelling myths, the book challenges readers to see politics as not only the obstacle to development, but also the means to achieve it. The Politics of Development is grounded in the everyday challenges facing people around the world in accessing the vital resources they need to survive and thrive. It illustrates the unavoidable reality that politics shapes who gets what, when, how; whether in family settings, local communities, national stages or global arenas. It provides readers with a clear roadmap for action centred on institutions, interests, and ideas, to better navigate competing demands and push forward profound change. There are no easy answers to the politics of development – instead, this book provides the analytical tools to understand why getting development right can be so hard and how you can positively respond to some of the critical challenges facing governments, societies and citizens around the world today. This text is essential reading for any student of the politics of development or Development Studies, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Programming Machine Learning : From Coding to Deep Learning
You've decided to tackle machine learning - because you're job hunting, embarking on a new project, or just think self-driving cars are cool. But where to start? It's easy to be intimidated, even as a software developer. The good news is that it doesn't have to be that hard.Master machine learning by writing code one line at a time, from simple learning programs all the way to a true deep learning system.Tackle the hard topics by breaking them down so they're easier to understand, and build your confidence by getting your hands dirty.Peel away the obscurities of machine learning, starting from scratch and going all the way to deep learning.Machine learning can be intimidating, with its reliance on math and algorithms that most programmers don't encounter in their regular work.Take a hands-on approach, writing the Python code yourself, without any libraries to obscure what's really going on.Iterate on your design, and add layers of complexity as you go.Build an image recognition application from scratch with supervised learning.Predict the future with linear regression. Dive into gradient descent, a fundamental algorithm that drives most of machine learning.Create perceptrons to classify data. Build neural networks to tackle more complex and sophisticated data sets.Train and refine those networks with backpropagation and batching.Layer the neural networks, eliminate overfitting, and add convolution to transform your neural network into a true deep learning system.Start from the beginning and code your way to machine learning mastery. What You Need: The examples in this book are written in Python, but don't worry if you don't know this language: you'll pick up all the Python you need very quickly.Apart from that, you'll only need your computer, and your code-adept brain.

Messerschmitt Me 328 Development & Politics
There was huge excitement when Argus engineer Gunther Diedrich succeeded in building a pulsejet powerful enough to propel a car up to 100km/h in 1941 - it was simple, cheap and lightweight, and before long Germany's premier fighter manufacturer Messerschmitt had come up with a simple, cheap and lightweight airframe on which to mount it - the Me 328. The new aircraft was first pitched as an interceptor, then as a parasite bomber for attacks on America, then as an airborne version of the infamous Soviet Katyusha rocket launcher, to fire heavyweight rocket-bombs at Allied shipping.Prototypes were built and flown both as gliders and under pulsejet power, and when Nazi fanatics needed an aircraft suitable for suicide attacks against high-value Allied targets, their first choice was the Me 328.Yet the type never fulfilled the grandiose ambitions of those who designed, built and supported it. Dan Sharp unravels a development history that was anything but straightforward to find out exactly what happened to the Luftwaffe’s most enigmatic ‘secret project’ aircraft.Messerschmitt Me 328 Development & Politics is based on extensive archival research of contemporary German documents and includes numerous previously unpublished period drawings as well as 50 new full colour profile artworks.

What is the difference between software development and programming?
Software development is a broader term that encompasses the entire process of creating software, including planning, designing, testing, and maintaining software applications. Programming, on the other hand, refers specifically to the act of writing code to instruct a computer to perform certain tasks. While programming is a key component of software development, software development involves a more comprehensive approach that includes various stages beyond just writing code.

Messerschmitt Me 262: Development and Politics
There are many myths surrounding the development of the Messerschmitt Me 262 jet fighter. Its unparalleled performance is beyond doubt; easily able to outpace its opponents and possessing the firepower to shred them in seconds.Yet immediately after the Second World War, rumours abounded that official indifference, technical shortcomings and interference from the Fuhrer himself had crippled the Me 262's progress and delayed its appearance on the front line until it was far too late. Begun as a series of design concepts during 1938, the fighter would not enter mass production until the spring of 1944.Even then it failed to make any notable impact until the closing weeks of the war, when Me 262s began destroying USAAF bombers at an alarming rate.Exactly what happened to cause this apparently late start and who was responsible has until now been largely a matter of conjecture. Grounded in research involving thousands of wartime documents spread across archival collections in three countries, Messerschmitt Me 262 Development & Politics finally sweeps aside the myths and provides a clear understanding of the real history.Sharp examines the aircraft’s technical development in unparalleled detail as well as analysing the ongoing discussions surrounding the Me 262 at the highest levels within the Messerschmitt company, the German Air Ministry and Adolf Hitler’s inner circle. Pathways to Development : From Politics to Power
This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-BC-ND 4.0 International License. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. The puzzle of why some countries are wealthier and more developed than others continues to confound students and practitioners of development alike.Whereas earlier grand explanations focused on issues of 'geography' or 'institutions', the second decade of the 21st century finally saw 'politics' arrive centre-stage within international development. This catalyzed a search to answer the key question: under what conditions do governments become committed to and capable of delivering development? How can these processes be conceptualized and researched? And what (if anything) can be done to 'get the politics right' for development?Pathways to Development draws on a major comparative research effort to present new answers to the question of how politics shapes development. It develops and applies a 'power domains' framework across multiple countries in the global South to uncover the political drivers of development across a wide range of policy areas, including economic growth, gender equity, health, and education.Hickey and Sen find that a country's pathway to development is shaped less by institutional type than by the nature of the politics and power relations that underpinned these institutions and which shape how they actually function in practice within different policy domains.Comparative analysis reveals two alternative pathways to developmental outcomes, each of which is specific to particular configurations of power. The first involves a dominant ruling coalition with a strong developmental vision that faces an existential threat from social forces; the second involves competitive settlements within which the short-term vision of ruling elites and the politicization of the public bureaucracy are offset by the presence of strong and coherent coalitions within particular policy domains.Hickey and Sen use these insights to generate innovative, practical suggestions for policy actors seeking to promote inclusive development that are aligned to critical differences in political context.
